Coltrane played Selmer saxophones for much of his life, and in 1960 adopted the Mark VI soprano, with which he recorded "A Love Supreme". The instrument, praised for its ergonomics and homogeneity of sound, offered him great flexibility and richness of tone in both bass and treble.

This saxophone was recently completely overhauled by luthier David Beuvry at the Le Temps des Soufflants workshop. The instrument has been fully re-stamped with French Chedeville Lelandais brown leather stamps, plastic resonator.
