On the occasion of the Fête de l’Escalade, a unique event is taking center stage in the heart of Geneva’s old town: Cabinet of Curiosities, a fascinating gathering that blends tradition, unusual objects, and heritage.

Organized by Geneva Collections, the Swiss platform dedicated to antiques and collectibles, in collaboration with the Battolo family—a cornerstone of Geneva’s antiquarian scene—this event invites visitors on a timeless journey.

The Fête de l’Escalade: A Beloved Genevan Tradition

Each year, the Fête de l’Escalade commemorates the victory of the Genevans over the Savoyard troops in 1602. This iconic celebration is marked by parades in period costumes, traditional songs, and the famous breaking of the chocolate marmite. More than just a historical event, it’s a cherished popular festival that unites the city around its identity and heritage.

This year, Cabinet of Curiosities joins this tradition by showcasing Geneva’s history through exceptional objects.

A Cabinet of Curiosities: The Theater of the Strange and the Wonderful

First appearing during the Renaissance, cabinets of curiosities were private collections of rare, unusual, and precious objects. These collections brought together natural, scientific, and artistic artifacts, forming a microcosm of the world’s knowledge and wonders. As the precursors to modern museums, they were places of discovery and amazement, featuring fossils, scientific instruments, artworks, and items from distant lands.

The Cabinet of Curiosities exhibition draws inspiration from this spirit, presenting unique pieces that spark curiosity and tell captivating stories, blending history, art, and mystery.

A Tribute to Genevan Tradition

In an atmosphere steeped in mystery, visitors will discover unique items from various eras, blending the craftsmanship of the past with the curious eye of today’s collectors. Each object tells a story, evoking a time, a tradition, or a memory, making this event a treasure trove of discovery.

An Event Not to Be Missed

The opening of Cabinet of Curiosities will take place on Saturday, December 14, 2024, from 4 PM to 8 PM, in the arcade located at Cour de Saint-Pierre 5, in the heart of the old town. The exhibition will remain open throughout the following week, offering culture, history, and curiosity enthusiasts the opportunity to immerse themselves in this extraordinary world.

Whether you’re an antique lover or simply curious, this event promises an enchanting journey into a realm where the past and mystery intertwine to tell the story of Geneva and much more.
