A handshake in space

Soyuz Apollo was the first crewed international space mission conducted jointly by the United States and the Soviet Union in July 1975. The live docking of the U.S. Apollo and the Soviet Soyuz spacecrafts was broadcasted to millions of people throughout the world.

This mission and the legendary handshake between the two commanders became a symbol of hope and de-escalation between the two superpowers submerged in the Cold War.

The Soyuz and Apollo flights launched seven and a half hours apart on July 15th 1975 and docked on July 18th.

Stafford and Leonov, the two commanders exchanged the first international handshake in space, through the open hatch of the Soyuz craft.

During this meeting, the crews read a statement from Soviet Secretary General Leonid Brezhnev and held a phone conversation with the U.S. President Gerald Ford.

The mission was successful both technically and in terms of relations between the two countries.

This joint venture became a symbol for scientific cooperation and brought out many hopes for the future. However, following this successful mission, space cooperation between the two countries declined, with the only major breakthrough being the Shuttle-MIR program more than a decade later.

This certificate is a wonderful momentum from this mission, awarded to one of the thousands of people working in different fields, in order to make the mission possible.
