Geneva, necessity coin / token. For wine. Late 16th century. A very rare issue for the soldiers of Geneva, marked POVR LE VIN. Issued to compensate for the shortage of circulating coinage and to pay the soldiers, during a very difficult period for the republic, resulting from the Savoyard blockade that began in 1585. It is probable that IG on the reverse indicates the mint master Jean Gringalet, 1588-1610. 1.87 grams Inv: G26367
