Description

Theatrum Belli Russo-Turcici, or A Most Accurate and Up-to-Date Map of Moldavia, Wallachia, Transylvania, Serbia, Romania, Bulgaria, Bessarabia, Croatia, Bosnia, Dalmatia, Slavonia, Morlachia, the Republic of Ragusa, the greater part of the Danube River, and the Archipelago with its islands. Published and engraved by Johann Michael Probst the Younger, Augsburg, 1787. Region: Danube River and Southeastern Europe This is a finely hand-coloured copper engraving printed from two plates by Johann Michael Probst the Younger in Augsburg, dated 1787. The frame measures approximately 66.5× 94 cm. The map is recorded in Szántai, Atlas Hungaricus 1528–1850, Vol. II, p. 472 (Probst 1b), and in Tooley's Dictionary of Mapmakers (Revised Edition K–P), p. 463, which notes that Johann Michael Probst the Younger (1757–1809) was an engraver and publisher who, together with his brothers, continued the family business after the death of their father. Under the family name, they revised Seutter's maps and produced more than one hundred new maps, issued both individually and in atlases such as the Atlas Novus Compendiarius. The firm ceased operations in 1809 following the deaths of Johann Michael and his brother Johann Georg. The map depicts the Kingdom of Hungary and its neighboring territories, together with the entire course of the Danube from its source to its mouth in the Black Sea. A decorative title cartouche appears in the lower left corner. Above the map is an additional German title reading: "New Theatre of War between Austria, Russia, and the Ottoman Porte, showing the course of the Danube to the Black Sea, together with the Kingdom of Hungary, Slavonia, Syrmia, Transylvania, Croatia, Dalmatia, Bosnia, Serbia, Bulgaria, Moldavia, Wallachia, Bessarabia, Ukraine, etc., A.D. 1787." This is a rare single-sheet map printed in Augsburg, produced in the context of the Russo-Turkish War (1787–1792), at the outset of the Austro-Turkish War (1788–1791). Repaired split in the middle, some toning to the paper, otherwise decent condition. For shipping, please contact Geneva Collections for an estimate Inv: G26260
